ELFACK 2023 shines the spotlight on the future of the energy industry

To support the electrification of society, the reinforcement of electricity grids is essential. But at the same time, as plans are being made for major expansions, the industry is in dire need of new skills. Peter Silverhjärta at EBR is one of those who work on a daily basis with the issues and challenges facing the industry. “Elfack is an important meeting place where we can interact about what is happening in and around the industry.”

The electricity grid sector, as well as the energy industry in general, is changing. The electrification of society creates challenges that affect large parts of the industry but also stakeholders.

Peter Silverhjärta is an expert at EBR, which is an industry practice that ensures the safe and cost-effective management and development of electricity networks in Sweden through the issuance of guidelines. Almost all electricity network companies in Sweden use the EBR guidelines.

– There is currently talk of the need to reinvest in electricity networks over the coming years, but at the same time there is a shortage of staff and there is also the challenge to build networks cost-effectively. In addition, we are in the aftermath of a pandemic that has affected our capabilities, Peter says.

The challenges facing the electricity grid industry also include work to strengthen sustainability and the transition.

– It’s interesting with all the new technologies and innovations that are being introduced. Right now, for example, there’s a lot of focus on alternative materials. In the past, wooden poles for overhead lines have been impregnated in a way that is now gradually being phased out because the impregnation has an environmental impact.

ELFACK attracts key skills

Tackling the major issues facing the sector requires companies and operators to keep up to date with the latest news. But perhaps more important than ever before is collaboration and joint action.

– Elfack is an important meeting place where the industry comes together and is updated on what is happening both within the industry and beyond. Elfack has always dealt with everything from stations to distribution. For Elfack 2023, it is important that we talk about the future and alternative solutions.

The skills shortage in the electricity network industry is not unique. The energy transition means that several industries are in dire need of new skills and more employees.

– When it comes to the skills challenge, Elfack has a significant role to play. Schools send students to visit the fair, creating an excellent opportunity for them to see what opportunities are available.

Electrification requires collaboration

Issues related to electricity networks will be addressed at Elfack 2023. The enormous electrification process that society is undergoing places great demands on the industry, but a meeting place like Elfack brings together the necessary expertise in one place, opening the way for addressing challenges as well as for discussion and cooperation.

– I hope that people leave Elfack with some “aha” experiences. My hope is that companies and visitors will take away valuable knowledge at a time that demands it, Peter concludes.
