Granitor invests in skills supply through Startskottet

The need to find the right personnel is one of the most important issues facing the electricity and energy industry. It is estimated that there will be a shortage of almost 30,000 electricians in Sweden in the coming years, while the electrification of society is creating new challenges for society and industry.

Granitor Electro operates as an electrical and engineering company with strong roots in Scandinavia. The business focuses on the development of contracting and service solutions in construction, real estate and industry. To contribute to the re-growth of the industry and also to provide for its own needs, the company is launching what it calls Startskottet (“the Starting Gun”) – an apprenticeship programme for recent graduates from the electricity and energy programme at upper secondary school. We contacted Pia Muhli, HR department at Granitor Electro to find out more about the project.

Tell us Pia, what is Startskottet and how did the idea come up?

Startskottet is an introductory programme for apprentices starting at Granitor Electro. We bring apprentices together in a common forum to make sure they get a really good start to their careers. The programme includes digital meetings on Teams, a common communication space to connect with other apprentices, and regular quizzes with different themes. Across the country, we are also investing in our apprentice mentors through training in supervision and networking in Teams meetings. In this way, we want to make sure that apprentices get a really warm welcome, with the opportunity to reflect on their apprenticeship and test their skills both in the workplace and through quizzes.

During Granitor Electro’s growth journey, the number of apprentices has steadily increased each year, which is very positive in terms of meeting our skills needs. This year, we have welcomed 100 apprentices to Startskottet. We want the programme to expose apprentices to the future opportunities that abound in the electrical and engineering industry. The development of apprentices is our common future, and we want to focus on this through the programme.

What are your ambitions for the initiative and what results do you want to see within five years?

We want Granitor Electro to be the first choice for apprentices on electrical and energy programmes. We need both to increase our numbers and at the same time to manage continuous learning for the rapid developments taking place in electrical engineering.

Startskottet is part of a long-term skills supply strategy to have the right skills in the right place, where we are keen for apprentices to feel confident and motivated early on. In the move towards a more sustainable and energy-efficient society, the right skills are crucial and for us that journey begins with Startskottet.
