At Elfack: how innovative energy storage can address peak demand

Energy storage is developing rapidly.

The potential is great: the technology can both contribute to sustainable energy development and cut costs for the individual user.

– We see nothing but benefits, says Victor Olsson, Nordic Sales Manager at Sparq Technology, who will be demonstrating the latest storage technology at Elfack 2025.

Founded in 2021 and with headquarters in Gothenburg, Sparq Technology is part of the CEBON Group, which has more than 35 years of experience in battery solutions.

– We are very much an innovation-driven company. That’s the real reason Sparq was started, Victor Olsson says.

Energy storage is Sparq’s dominant and most dynamic business area.

– At Elfack 2025 we are focusing on our scalable and flexible solution for modular energy storage, from 125 up to hundreds of thousands of kilowatts. There is really no upper limit; it all depends on what the customer wants.

Great benefits to society

Customers range from energy companies and businesses across all industries to public sector organisations, property owners and individual households.

– More and more industries want to reduce the power used in their production, while energy companies want to reduce the power on their grids, Victor explains. The major benefit to society arises when we have an energy deficit. Energy storage can then be used to pump electricity onto the national or local grid.

AI cuts power peaks

The major benefit of energy storage for the customer is to cut energy peaks by disconnecting from the grid and connecting to the battery-stored electricity instead.

With Sparq’s AI-powered solution, customers don’t have to keep track of price changes, as the peaks are cut automatically. Victor provides an example:

– Take a bakery, which draws 100 kW in standard consumption. In the morning, when the ovens are switched on, there is a peak of 200 kW for a short period. The bakery has to pay a very high power tariff on the difference.

– Our technology uses measuring points in the customer’s energy consumption, which notice immediately that the ovens are running. The energy store then pumps in a lot of energy, the power increase is cut, and you can get more even consumption.

No over-optimistic calculations

Flexibility is a key word in Sparq’s service.

– The system is scalable. Customers shouldn’t have to pay for more than they need, Victor says.

– We are one of the few companies in Sweden that know batteries from the ground up, and have optimised our energy storage. Everything from the chemistry in the cell to the control electronics, to give customers full power.

For customers, it is obviously very important to get a return on their investment, which they want to get as quickly as possible.

– It is not possible to say in general terms how long it takes for the customer to see a return. A number of variables come into play, such as the location of the energy storage and which markets the energy storage will be used for, Victor says.

– But we don’t make over-optimistic calculations, we work with actual figures. And we see that our customers both save and make money on their investments.
